Abstract: Prediabetes and Small Fiber Neuropathy

Prediabetes does not cause small fiber neuropathy

Thaisetthawatkul, Fernandes, and Herrmann looked at the connection between prediabetes and small fiber neuropathy.1 117 patients were in included in the study that looked at differences in intraepidermal nerve fiber density for patients in three groups: diabetes mellitus, prediabetes, and normoglycemia. The study found that the rate of abnormal intraepidermal nerve fiber density was higher for patients with diabetes mellitus, but there was no significant difference in intraepidermal nerve fiber density between patients with prediabetes and normoglycemia.

“There was no significant difference in intraepidermal fiber density (IENFD) at the ankle between PD and NG. The rate of skin biopsy abnormality and SFN was not higher in PD compared to NG. In contrast, ankle IENFD was lower in DM compared to PD or NG, and the rate of skin biopsy abnormality and SFN was higher in DM than in PD and NG.”
